Inspire, contemplate and explore.
The Musée Louis-Hémon is both a space for creation and exchange, and above all a place to share its passion for literature and regional history.
In addition to offering a breathtaking view of the mouth of the Péribonka River and Lac-Saint-Jean, the Musée Louis-Hémon offers unique and refreshing museum experiences every year, including the new permanent exhibition Péribonka, à la source des mots, the temporary exhibition À la force d’une terre and a visit to the Samuel-Bédard house.
📚 New permanent exhibition: Péribonka, à la source des mots 📚
Péribonka, à la source des mots is first and foremost a celebration of the richness and diversity of Franco-Canadian literature.
While featuring stories that are firmly rooted in Péribonka, such as Maria Chapdelaine, the exhibition helps to shed light on the sources of the imaginations of more than thirty of your favorite authors.
Along the way, you’ll discover how, from a simple spark, an astonishing creative process is born that has the power to unleash words by the million and transform them into memorable literary works.
Péribonka, à la source des mots is an invitation to discover, create and share.
🎨 À la force d’une Terre by regional artist Mathieu Rousseau 🎨
Explore the beauty and strength of nature in the northern Lac-Saint-Jean region in a different way.
Through the works of local artist Mathieu Rousseau, who revisits the novel Maria Chapdelaine, plunge into a colorful creative universe that combines abstraction and figuration to pay homage to the pioneers who came to develop the territory of the Haut du Lac and celebrate these landscapes changing with the cycle of the seasons.
A colorful exhibition!
🏠 La Maison Samuel-Bédard 🏠
In 1912, French writer Louis Hémon arrived in Péribonka on foot, having traveled the 110 kilometers or so between Roberval and Péribonka. He stayed with local resident Samuel Bédard for over two months. It was here that he observed the local population and took notes for his novel Maria Chapdelaine.
We invite you to step back in time to the beginning of the 20th century, at the heart of the colonization of Lac-Saint-Jean, by visiting the Maison Samuel-Bédard, a living witness to this era. This immersive experience will immerse you in the daily life of the region’s first settlers, while you explore the house that housed the author during his stay.
